What Is Sea Buckthorn Oil?
Sea buckthorn is a small, hardy berry that grows on tough shrubs, often near cold coastlines and high mountains. The berries get pressed for their oil, and that oil is what gives Golden Glow its deep orange gold color.
That color comes from carotenoids, plant pigments (the same family of pigment that makes carrots orange). Sea buckthorn oil is full of them, which is why even a small amount turns a balm gold.
The Fatty Acids Sea Buckthorn Brings to the Team
Our tallow balms already carry a fatty acid profile close to your skin's own oils: oleic acid (37-45%) to soften and help other ingredients settle in, palmitic acid (24-30%) to support your skin barrier and help it hold onto moisture, and stearic acid (15-25%) for structure and protection.
Sea buckthorn oil brings its own set to the team, most notably palmitoleic acid, also called omega-7. It is a fatty acid your skin already makes on its own, and it shows up alongside a mix of omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9 fatty acids in sea buckthorn oil.
At Kai Tallow, we do not see this as tallow needing help. We see it as two skin-familiar fat sources working together, each bringing something the other does not, for a richer daily balm.
Does Sea Buckthorn Clog Pores?
Short answer: no. Sea buckthorn oil sits low on the comedogenic scale, a 0 to 5 scale dermatologists use to rate how likely an oil is to clog pores. Our tallow sits low on that same scale. Combined, we have never had a reason to worry about it.

In Golden Glow, sea buckthorn oil is blended into our tallow base, not used alone. You will see a warm golden tint the moment you scoop it out, and it may leave a light golden cast on your skin for a minute or two while it settles in. It fades as the balm sinks in and does not stain your skin.
Clothes are a different story for any oil-based product. Give Golden Glow a minute to settle into your skin fully before you get dressed, the same way you would with any oil or balm.
