Raw Honey Cleanser: Why We Use Raw Honey (Not Regular Honey) in Our Cleanser

Maybe you already have a bottle of our Raw Honey Cleanser by your sink. Maybe you are still deciding. Either way, the same two questions come up. Why honey? And why does it matter that it is raw?

Here is the short answer. Raw honey is honey the way the bees made it. It has not been heated or filtered down to a clear syrup. That difference matters for your skin. It is the reason we would never swap it for the honey bear on a grocery store shelf.

When I started Kai Tallow, I was tired of "clean" products that were watered down or full of fillers. Honey turned out to be the same story. Most of it is cooked and filtered long before it reaches you. So let me walk you through what raw honey does in a cleanser, how it is different from regular honey, and how to get the most from it every day.

Raw Honey vs. Regular Honey: What Is the Difference?

Most honey at the store is not raw. It is heated to high temperatures so it pours smooth and stays clear on the shelf longer. Much of it is also filtered hard to take out pollen and tiny bits of wax.

That looks pretty in a squeeze bottle. But heat breaks down honey's natural enzymes. Enzymes are tiny helpers made by the bees, and they do real work inside the honey. Once they are cooked, they do not come back.

Raw honey skips all of that. It is not heated past the natural warmth of the hive, and it is not filtered down to syrup. It keeps its enzymes, its pollen, and its natural antioxidants (compounds that help protect against everyday stress from sun and air).

One more thing to know. "Raw" is not a word the FDA defines, so any brand can print it on a label. That is why we are specific. The honey in our cleanser is raw, unfiltered, and organic. It is also the very first ingredient on the list, not a drop added so the label can say "honey."

What Raw Honey Does for Your Skin

Honey is a humectant. That means it pulls water toward your skin and helps it stay there. Honey is mostly natural sugars, and those sugars love water.

This is why a honey cleanser feels so different from a foaming wash. Most foaming cleansers use strong soaps (called surfactants) that grab oil and dirt. The trouble is, they also grab the natural fats your skin needs to hold in water. That is the tight, squeaky feeling so many of us grew up thinking meant "clean." It is not. We wrote a whole post on why that tight, dry feeling after cleansing isn't normal.

Raw honey works the other way. It cleans while it helps your skin hold on to water. In our Raw Honey Cleanser, it teams up with organic jojoba oil, a light plant oil that lifts away dirt, extra oil, and light makeup. No foam. No stripping. Just a clean face that feels soft after you rinse.

Customers with sensitive skin, acne-prone skin, and everything in between tell us this is the cleanser they never want to give up.

"Why Not Just Wash With Honey From My Kitchen?"

Good question. Honey face washing is all over social media. So why buy a cleanser at all? Three reasons.

  1. Kitchen honey is usually not raw. If it came from a grocery store, it was most likely heated and filtered. The enzymes were gone before it ever touched your face.
  2. Plain honey is sticky and slow to rinse. A well-made cleanser spreads easily, lifts away the day, and rinses clean in seconds.
  3. Honey only protects itself when it is pure and thick. Once water gets in, its natural protection drops fast. That is true for a honey jar by a steamy sink, and it is true for any product that mixes honey with water.

That last point is why our Raw Honey Cleanser has a small, tested preservative system. Honey is not a preservative once it meets water. A safe product needs a real plan to stay clean from the first pump to the last. We explain this in detail in Why Honey + Tallow Balms Grow Mold. If it is not good enough for my babies, it is not good enough for you.

Why We Keep Honey and Tallow Separate

You might wonder why we do not just stir honey into our tallow balm. Two reasons. First, tallow has to be melted to blend, and that heat would cook the honey. It would not be raw anymore. Second, tallow is pure fat and honey holds water. Fat and water do not stay mixed on their own. So a proper tallow honey balm needs a preservative system and an emulsifier.

So we let each one shine where it works best. Raw honey goes in a cleanser built to hold water safely. Tallow goes in a pure balm with no water at all, so it stays fresh and stable.

How to Use Raw Honey Cleanser

  1. Wet your face with lukewarm water. Hot water strips the same fats a harsh soap does.
  2. Pump a small amount into your palm.
  3. Massage it onto damp skin for 30 to 60 seconds. It will not foam, and it does not need to.
  4. Rinse and pat your face almost dry. Leave it a little damp.
  5. Seal it in with a tallow balm while your skin is still damp.

Use it morning and night, every day. Daily use is where you see the difference.

That last step is where honey and tallow work as a team. The honey helps pull water in. Our Original Tallow Balm helps hold it there. Tallow is made of oleic acid (about 37 to 45 percent), palmitic acid (about 24 to 30 percent), and stearic acid (about 15 to 25 percent). These are fatty acids, the building blocks of fats, and they are similar to the fats your skin already makes. For sensitive skin, or if you are pregnant or nursing, reach for our fragrance-free Bare Tallow Balm or Infused Tallow Balm.

Wearing full foundation or heavy sunscreen today? Our Pure Tallow Bar is the pick for those days.

As with any new product, patch test first on your inner arm and wait a day. If you are pregnant, nursing, or have a diagnosed skin condition, a quick check-in with your doctor is a smart step.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is raw honey safe to use on my face every day?
Yes. Our cleanser is made for daily use, morning and night. The honey helps your skin hold water while it cleans.

Will the cleanser leave my face sticky?
No. It rinses clean with lukewarm water and leaves skin soft, not tacky.

Can I use it if I have acne-prone skin?
Yes. Many of our customers with acne-prone skin use it every day. The formula is short and simple, and it rinses clean. No one has ever reported clogging of pores.

Does it take off makeup?
It lifts away light makeup with ease. For full foundation or heavy sunscreen, the Pure Tallow Bar is your best pick.

If honey is natural, why does the cleanser need a preservative?
Honey only protects itself when it is pure and thick. Once it is mixed with water, as it is in any cleanser, it needs a tested preservative to stay safe from the first use to the last.

Your face wash should leave your skin softer than it found it. Raw honey is how we make that happen. Be blessed!
